The Department of Educational Research and Innovation (DIIE), part of the Dirección General de Desarrollo Educativo de la Subsecretaría de educación Básica, held the first gathering of experiences for schools participating in the One World program in Chilpancingo, Mexico on October 22 -23, 2024. The goal of the two-day conference was to help students prepare for life through a variety of authentic learning experiences that encourage them to follow their passions while enhancing global understanding and human communication.
The participating institutions were Fray Bartolomé de las Casas Elementary School, Raymundo Abarca Alarcón Secondary School, Los Años Maravillosos Educational Center, and Colegio México, with a total of 88 participants. Students from each school presented their projects focused on environmental issues, reflecting as a group on the importance of becoming more aware of the environmental consequences of human activities. Each school shared their work and perspectives.
One World founder, Joe Carvin, spoke to the group, encouraging them to continue working and inviting them to participate in a contest as part of the program. The event continued with small-group discussions, where participants developed three proposals: one at a global level—what they hope for the world; one for their state—what they wish to see implemented locally; and finally, what they could change, improve, or carry out in their own cities, neighborhoods, and homes, all related to environmental issues. Many ideas emerged from these discussions, giving voice to the concerns of the children and youth of our city in support of environmental protection.
