On December 10, 2024, One World and Clarkstown School District took a significant step forward in their partnership, bringing together students from Clarkstown High School North in New City, New York, and Centro Educativo Años Maravillosos in Zihuatanejo, Guerrero, Mexico, for their first virtual exchange through the Global Connections program. This collaboration marks a new chapter in the district’s commitment to preparing students for the future by fostering global competence and cultural understanding.
This year, Clarkstown’s participation in the Global Connections program has expanded as part of its Future Ready initiative, now including not just one elementary school, but also 1 middle and high school. Through this expansion, One World is helping to ensure that Clarkstown students are exposed to global citizenship, empowering them with the skills and experiences necessary to thrive in an interconnected world.
During the virtual exchange session, students from both schools presented on the theme “My School and Community,” offering valuable insights into their respective lives. Through this exchange, students were able to explore the similarities and differences between their communities, practice second languages, and engage in meaningful cross-cultural dialogue.
The Clarkstown students impressed their peers by delivering their presentations entirely in Spanish, demonstrating both their language skills and dedication to cultural exchange. Their Mexican counterparts practiced English, creating an interactive environment that enhanced both language abilities and mutual understanding.
A heartwarming moment of connection occurred when both schools discovered they share a common school color—purple—creating an instant bond between students, despite the geographical distance. This exchange was not just a classroom activity; it was a tangible example of how virtual connections can bridge cultures and inspire lasting relationships.
As One World continues to support Clarkstown’s Future Ready program, this expanding partnership will provide students with even more opportunities to learn, collaborate, and build global friendships.
