Last year at this time, in a rather lengthy document I shared with you my philosophy of life as I completed 25,568 days here on the planet earth: Day 25,568
This year, as I live into my 25,934th day on this life continuum here on this planet we call Earth, I want to share with you both my thanks for joining the One World family and my personal goals for the next 3,000 days.
In his book, The Last Economy, Emad Mostaque, has done us all a great favor in that he wrote one of the first books that really attempts to tell us how we can transition from here to there:
“Your economic life expectancy is shrinking. Not your career. Not your current job. Your entire economic relevance as a human being. We are living through a historical epoch of unprecedented change, a finite window of time during which the fundamental rules of our civilization are being rewritten. This is not speculation. This is a phase transition.”
When I look back on my 70th year one of the things I am most proud of is that, working with the One World team, we published our first online book, The Great Transition to Sustainable Super Abundance: Uniting Humanity for a Future Where Everyone Thrives.
After extensive research, we concluded that dramatic advances in technology have provided humanity with the tools we need to move from a world of scarcity to a post-scarcity, solved world where we bring an end to poverty, hunger, disease, and the need to work.
Looked at from a species-wide perspective, our species – riding on the back of Homo Technologicas – has been extraordinarily successful since 1900, increasing our global population from 1.65 billin to over 8 billion while at the same time making the average human being far richer as GDP per capita has grown 7x to 8x while our life expectancy has doubled from about 35 year to over 70 years.
Unfortunately, Homo Sapiens, or human wisdom, has not kept pace with our technological advances, leading US diplomat George Kennan to remark at Oppenheimer’s funeral that no one understood better than Oppenheimer that with the invention of the nuclear bomb, we have created a tool out of all proportion to our moral strength.
Similarly, popular scientist Carl Sagan called for us to develop a human wisdom commensurate with our technology. That wisdom is needed today more than ever because the powerful tools we have been building can be used to eliminate all forms of human poverty or all forms of human life, as former President John F. Kennedy made clear in his 1961 inaugural address.
In The Last Economy, Mostaque tells us that we have 1,000 days to deal with the tech wave of opportunity hurdling our way. We believe he is more right than wrong as anyone following our work will understand.
However, let’s assume he is wrong by a factor of three. Let’s assume we have 3,000 days or 8.21 years to figure out a way to use the dramatic advances in our human tools for the good of the whole of humanity. That still only gives us to the year 2034 to radically alter our current mindset to understand that we need to abandon our current thinking around a Zero Sum game centered on scarcity and urgently find pathways forward to live into a world of Sustainable Super Abundance.
I am not a historian, but it seems clear to me that the invention of the printing press and the mindset shift brought on by the Renaissance served as the spark needed to launch the Scientific and Industrial Revolutions that have transformed our world.
It is exactly this kind of mindset shift we are seeking to work with you to build over the next 1,000 to 3,000 days. Our goal with everything we do at One World is to help bring about a new Renaissance mindset, a mindset that helps us create pathways to a world of Sustainable Super Abundance. In this new world of abundance, determining your life purpose becomes the next big challenge, as work will no longer define who we are.
In closing, I want to commit to you that I will make every effort to follow the teaching of Maimonides who, my AI tells me, wrote the following in Hilchot Teshuvah 3:4:
“Every person should view themselves as though they are equally balanced between good and evil, and the world itself as equally balanced between good and evil. If they perform one good deed, they tip the balance of their own soul and the entire world toward merit.”
While I am proud of the book we wrote I am even more grateful for the wonderful miracle my son and his wife brought into the world with their beautiful wonderful daughter making me a grandad for the first time.
The work I do at One World and the commitment I make below will be focused on providing my grand daughter a world of possibility by the time she reaches 24 years old.
My commitment on my 71st birthday is to make every effort to bring as much positive loving energy into the world as I possibly can each and every day Indeed, as I write this, I think of my wonderful friend Madam Lin former principal of the Jinling Primary School, the only school in the world to achieve the recognition of being a One World School of Excellence.
Madam Lin encourages her educators to teach with a loving heart. But Madam Lin does not just encourage her educators to teach with a loving heart, she shows them and everyone who comes onto the Jinling campus the way forward for humanity because as you approach her school, there emblazoned and carved into the bushes that are the first thing you see at her school is the word “Love” in English. In English!! Wow!! Exponential Wow!! It is precisdely that kind of thinking from my good friend Madam Lin that we need to take across the world.
And finally, if you think you are not a co-creator of the universe, and your actions have no impact, you need to understand the mathematical concept of the Butterfly Effect, where a mosquito flapping its wings in the Philippines can cause a hurricane in Texas:
The Butterfly Effect
While I believe our AI search explains the Butterfly Effect well, I think if you really want to understand the thinking behind this concept, please have a look at this wonderful video by Andy Andrews: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mo6fBAT8f-s&t=15s
Please enjoy the video and join us as we seek to educate woth loving hearts.
Sincerely,
Joe
