🌍 Shaping the Future: The Launch of the Westchester Green County (WGC USA) Global Initiative

The student leaders from WGC USA supported by the One World team proudly joined educators, students, and global partners for the launch of the 2025 – 2026 Westchester Green County school based environmental campaign.

This year marks the fifth year in a row that students from Westchester County will be encouraging students from Westchester to engage in the fight against climate change by adopting the Planet Ed Climate Action Plan that culminates each year on World Environment Day with a celebration of student leadership and of an inspiring journey toward sustainability, innovation, and global collaboration. Here is how we celebrated World Environment Day this past June:  World Environment Day Celebration 2025

πŸ’‘ The 100 Schools Challenge

This year’s kickoff brought together passionate students and professionals from Westchester Green County (USA) determined to encourage their schools to engage in the fight against climate change.   The WGC USA student leaders decided to continue with the launch of their 2025 global challenge and then expand it to include a second Big Step.   The 100 School Challenge now invites 100 schools worldwide to engage in an ambitious two-part program where:

Part 1: Builds on past action-oriented success, now involving 8 concrete, proactive steps schools can take to measure and reduce GHG emissions at their schools and in their community.

Part 2: Expands the sustainability conversation in a way that empowers young leaders to reimagine a future of abundance, sustainability, and human flourishing.

🌎 Global Participation

In the past, WGC USA invited global participants to join the fight against climate change by sharing things they have done in their community at the year-end World Environment Day event.  This year, WGC USA decided to reach out to like-minded students from across the world on day one.  Therefore, this first session wasn’t limited to Westchester β€” it became a truly global meeting of minds. Participants joined from Mexico, Brazil, and China, highlighting the need to build bridges among nations through education and shared purpose.

From Mexico, passionate educators and environmental advocates shared how schools are transforming sustainability education at the community level. Brazil brought creative energy and enthusiasm, reinforcing the importance of youth engagement in building an inclusive and sustainable future.

Meanwhile, Joe Carvin, founder of One World and author of The Great Transition, joined the session directly from China, where he is currently on a mission to deepen cultural understanding and strengthen One World’s global partnerships. His goal is to foster a powerful global connection between China and the world, starting with sustainability.   Indeed, the hope is that working with local educational authorities, One World can support the same kind of student leadership group that was supported in Westchester, in Nanjing, China.  Wouldn’t it be great if WGC USA had a counterpart, student-led organization in Nanjing, China?

Indeed, New York State and the Jiangsu, Province where Nanjing Is located have a longstanding sister-province/state relationship that One World is hoping to revive around sustainable actions.

πŸ“š One Big Step ForwardInspired by two groundbreaking books β€” The Great Transition to Sustainable Superabundance by Joe Carvin and Stellar: A World Beyond Limits by James Arbib and Tony Seba this year we are looking to expand the sustainability conversation to include both environmental action and potential for Sustainable Super Abundance.  Both books make clear that the potential to bring an end to poverty, hunger and even the need to work has never been greater and is technologically feasible, if, if, if, humanity can find ways to come together and use dramatic advances in AI for the good of the whole of humanity.   In their book Stellar, Seba and Arbib, go one step further asserting that advances in the development of solar, wind power, and batteries something they call SWB have now reached the point where they can energize all industrial needs thereby making the creation of Stellar communities possible.

As part of the 100 School Challenge we are asking student leaders to take one Big Step forward this year. One World will be creating a Global Coalition of Sustainable Super Abundance (GCSSA).  As part of the 100 School Challenge students and schools are encouraged find ways to support and promote GCSSA.  They actions might include:

  1. Recruit 2 educators and 4 student leaders to take part in bi-monthly global conversations.
  2. Start a Sustainable Super Abundance (SSA) Club to drive local environmental action.
  3. Host SSA presentations at your school.
  4. Join the conversation on the future of humanity β€” powered by young voices, fresh ideas, and shared purpose.

This first meeting of the Westchester Green County USA team represents the beginning of a movement β€” one that unites students, educators, and communities to turn sustainability into action and learning into leadership.

The 100 School Challenge also offers another opportunity to get involved in terms of creating a world of Sustainable Super Abundance this time at the local level where we are encouraging school leaders to take more robust Community Schools Approach to helping your community become both sustainable and future ready:  Future Ready 2050 Communities
