Syria, Middle East to dominate upcoming UN meeting
Syria Talks Ongoing
As many as 16 opposition groups gathered in Damascus to discuss how to overthrow Syrian President Bashar al-Assad just days after another, perhaps more impactful meeting in the Hague. The Friends of Syria and other groups supporting the opposition indicated that they would back an increase and toughening of sanctions, but that any intervention was not likely.
In a lead up to the United Nations General Assembly this week, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and UN envoy Lakdhar Brahimi discussed the situation on the ground in Syria. It is expected that Syria will dominate much of the agenda this week.
Relations Between Egypt and the United States
Egyptican President Mohamed Morsi says that relations between the two nations will move forward if the US addresses what he claims is a failure to live up to the Camp David Accord’s commitment to Palestinian self-rule.
