Growing tension between US and Israel over Iran
Relations between Israel and the United States are growing more tense with a crucial meeting of the United Nations just weeks away. The Obama administration was forced to respond to assertions in an Israeli newspaper that the president had rejected a call from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to meet to discuss Iran.
Meanwhile, Netanyahu took the opportunity to attack Obama on the anniversary of the September 11 attacks to issue a stern rebuke of the US insisting it has no right to try and restrain Israel concerning Iran. The New York Times also reports that Israel would consider using the upcoming presidential election to pressure the US.
By day’s end, however, a phone call was arranged between the two leaders, who then reinforced their united determination to keep a nuclear Iran at bay.
