France says Syria in a “civil war”

France joined the United Nations in describing the current situation as a “civil war,” but the United States does not agree with the characterization.

“When many groups belonging to the same people tear each other apart and kill each other, if you can’t call it a civil war, then there are no words to describe it,” said French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius.

Whether or not Syria qualifies as a civil war is a matter of some debate and politics inevitably impacts how analysts view the situation.

Meanwhile, the war of words between Russia and the US heated up as both sides accused the other of sending arms to Syria. Who is arming whom and whether the violence has escalated to the point of a civil war (or genocide for that matter) is a discussion for another day, and the way events are developing it will be another day of brutal attacks and a rising death toll.
