Is the US better with realists in charge of foreign policy?

Stephen Walt writes in Foreign Policy that “most of America’s major military interventions of the past two decades, as well as other key initiatives like NATO expansion” have been the result of a liberal-conservative alliance. So what course would the US have taken if realists were in charge?
