Not your father’s mafia: Organized crime now Italy’s biggest bank

The Italian anti-crime group SOS Impresa recently issued a report that found organized crime now possess 65 billion euros in liquidity, making it Italy’s number one bank.

The report, obtained by Reutersnotes that the leading organized crime groups have generated profits equivalent to 7 percent of national output.

“The classic neighborhood or street loan shark is on the way out, giving way to organized loan-sharking that is well connected with professional circles and operates with the connivance of high-level professionals,”  reports Reuters.
