Merkel rings in 2012 with pledge to save the euro
In a New Year’s address, German Chancellor Angela Merkel pledged to “do everything to strengthen the euro” while stressing the importance of greater cooperation among European nations. Merkel’s public endorsement coincides with reports of the euro’s second consecutive annual loss against the dollar in 2011, reports Bloomberg News.
“[The euro] will only succeed if Europe learns from the mistakes of the past. One of these is that a common currency can only be successful if we cooperate more than in the past in Europe,” she added.
She will have a chance to demonstrate that cooperation at a January 9 meeting with France’s Nicolas Sarkozy.
