Despite recession, US remain the most charitable nation
An annual poll conducted by Charities Aid Foundation find Americans top the list of most generous in the world in terms of time and money in 2011. The US ranked fifth last year.
The World Giving Index found overall the world has become a more charitable place over the last 12 months – with a 2% increase in the global population ‘helping a stranger’ and a 1% increase in people volunteering.
The rankings are determined by analyzing several factors, including changes in set giving behaviors, regional comparisons and comparisons between 2010 and 2011 data.
Nearly two-thirds of Americans said they had donated money to charity, more than 40% volunteered their time, and close to three-fourths said they had helped a stranger. The country improved in all three measurements over the past year.
