Banks struggle to guard against indirect risk exposure

While many US banks have taken steps to insulate themselves against potential contagion effects, the recent rescue of the Belgian-French bank Dexia highlights the indirect exposures which may be potentially more worrisome. The New York Times notes that Dexia’s bailout raises broader questions, including the “size of the losses they should take on loans that governments cannot repay.” Read more here.
